Document Check-in / Check-out

Use the Lock File feature when you download a document to work on it locally and want to prevent other users from uploading a new version at the same time.

Locking a file is Folderit’s check-out process. Unlocking it is the check-in step that makes the document available for further updates.

The Lock File button is shown when the file is shared with at least one user who has Editor permission, meaning that multiple people could otherwise update the document.

While a file is locked, users can still view and download it. A prominent notice shows that someone is working on the document, and no new version can be uploaded until the file is unlocked.

Lock or check out a document

  1. Open a file that is shared with one or more users who have Editor permission.
  2. Click the blue Lock File button in the right-hand panel.
  3. Select the date and time when the lock should expire. To keep the file locked until it is manually unlocked, remove the expiration date and time.
  4. Confirm that you want to lock the file.

Unlock or check in a document

  1. Open the locked file to view its details.
  2. Click the blue Unlock File button in the right-hand panel.

After the file has been unlocked, users with the required permission can upload a new version again.
